Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Range

January 7, 2011

I think I’ve found my perfect set of hair products!  The Super Skinny range by Paul Mitchell aims to smooth and soften hair and it definitely does both.

The shampoo comes in a tall, skinny, stylish bottle and smells good – I don’t think it has a specific smell but it’s kind of melon like.  The conditioner comes in a matching bottle and is actually called a ‘Daily Treatment’ but basically does the same as a conditioner.  I hardly needed to use any of it to make my hair lovely and soft which is practically unheard of with my hair (usually I need to use handfuls of conditioner for it to have any effect!).

There are a few other products in the range but the one I’ve been using to style my hair is the Super Skinny Serum.  The bottle says to apply one pump of serum to your hair but as mine is so frizzy I decided to use two instead, which turned out to be the perfect amount for my hair.  I’ve used the Frizz-Ease serum before but found that I had to use loads of it to combat the frizz and then my hair would end up looking greasy.  It wasn’t really worth the money as the bottle really didn’t last very long.  This Super Skinny Serum though has got rid of the frizz while leaving my hair looking like I’ve got no product on.  It’s also made my hair the softest it’s ever been.

The serum costs £14.25 for 150ml, the shampoo is £9.30 for 300ml and the conditioner is £11.50 for 300ml.  As I don’t need to use very much of the serum, the bottle should last me a while so I think it’s certainly worth the money.  I really like the shampoo and conditioner as well but they are quite expensive so I would probably just buy them as a treat every now and again!

One last thing about the Super Skinny Range – it is supposed to reduce dry time although I haven’t noticed any difference in the time it takes for my hair to dry.  This doesn’t make much difference to me though; I would still buy the products.

Glamoriser

December 1, 2010

My normal hair

After trying to straighten my very curly hair a couple of years ago without much success, I decided I’d never bother attempting to get it straight again.  I managed to make my hair even frizzier than normal and the heat from the straighteners ruined my ends and made them split so much I had to go and get my hair cut.

170 degrees

I’ve been so bored with my hair recently that I threw my resolution out of the window and had another go.  I used the Glamoriser which can be either used for straightening or curling.  It is a dark shimmery purple and looks very high tech with its light up displays.  There are a few heat settings to choose from, varying from 110° to 230°.  After spraying my hair with copious amounts of heat protector, I set the Glamoriser to 110° (Incidentally, I was impressed at how quickly the straighteners heated up) and got to work.  Nothing happened!  My hair stayed just as curly as before.  So I upped the temperature gradually to 170° degrees where I got worried that I was going to burn my hair again.  I managed to get my hair wavy but there’s no way it could be called straight.  In the end I did try the straighteners at 230° but still couldn’t get the ends straight after trying for nearly an hour!  I just don’t get how loads of people with curly hair manage to get it poker straight – it must take ages!

230 degrees

I think the Glamoriser is a great product for people with straight-ish hair as you can do so much with it.  One thing I did find a bit annoying was that the straightening bit doesn’t close properly unless you hold it so you are given a heat proof finger glove thing to wear – although I still managed to give myself a massive, very painful burn on my thumb so be careful.  As the edges are curved, none of my hair ripped and there were no lines that you sometimes get with straighteners.  The Glamoriser is a really good price as you are getting 2 products for £79.99.  You can buy a Glamoriser from Sally Salon Services stores across the UK.

I’m a bit on the fence about them though as even though it is good that you get two products in one, I do think the fact that you have to hold the heated end to get them to work properly as straighteners is quite dangerous, especially if you are slightly clumsy like me!  Has anyone else had the same problem with them?

Lovea Bio Moisturising, Restorative, Conditioning Hair Mask

September 7, 2010

I was really pleased to see that I had received a Lovea conditioning hair mask from MyPure this week.  I have very dry, frizzy hair so am always on the lookout for a good hair mask.

I am still not convinced by the Lovea packaging and all 3 products I’ve tried by them have smelt exactly the same.  The smell is something I can’t decide on; it seems to be growing on me but they are definitely not the nicest smelling beauty products.

The conditioner doesn’t give any indication of how long to leave it on for or how much to use.  On my first try, I decided to use one handful and leave it on for 10 minutes which is what lots of other hair masks I’ve used say to do.  Unfortunately, this didn’t seem to have any effect on my hair so I tried again, this time using 3 handfuls and leaving it on for 20 minutes.  This worked better and helped get rid of some of the frizz.  I have found an excellent conditioning mask which I sometimes leave on my head for an hour wrapped in cling film so I think I will try the same technique with the Lovea one as well.  I don’t think I’ll switch to using Lovea permanently as my current conditioner works well even if I only leave it in for 10 minutes.  I think the Lovea conditioner would work on slightly less frizzy hair than mine as it has a quite a thick consistency and did make a slight difference to my uncontrollable hair!

Goody Brush Set

July 26, 2010

This morning I tried out a set of brushes by Goody.  The set of Start, Style, Finish brushes contains a detangling comb for wet hair, a brush to use while blow drying to create curls and a brush to use when your hair is dry to get rid of static.  I have curly hair already but thought I’d be able to use the set to make my curls a bit neater like I have done in the past using a round brush similar to the one in the set.

The brushes all look really nice – each one a different bright colour.  They’ve also all got plasmium gel handles which are kind of pointless but they do make the brushes comfy to hold.

Everything was fine with step 1, the detangling comb, but as soon as I wrapped my hair around the round brush to blow dry as the instructions say to do, my hair got completely stuck.  I’m not sure why as I have used round brushes before on my hair but this time my hair would not come out of the brush.  In the end it took me over half an hour to get my hair free and even then I ended up ripping quite a lot of it out.  It also hurt!  Obviously I decided to give up so I haven’t even used the third brush.

However, I did give them to my mum who has very fine, straight-ish hair.  Her hair was also catching in the round brush and although it didn’t get completely stuck some of it ripped anyway.  She did give the third brush a try but her hair actually got more static as she brushed it so that one didn’t seem to work either.  I’m not really sure why the third brush is needed – I never brush my hair when it’s dry as it makes my curls turn into frizz and if my sisters brush their straight hair when they’ve curled it, the curls drop out.  Maybe it would make straight hair less static though?

So, all in all, these brushes weren’t really a hit and my head is still very sore!
